Why Should I Turn The Other Cheek?

One passage in the bible that I never really understood was Matthew 5:39-40 that says,
But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
I always felt it was just about being gentle, non-violent, peaceful, and all that, but recently, I watched a video that gave me a whole new understanding of this verse. It's about freedom. True freedom is found in Christ, when we allow God to be in control, not people, events, or circumstances.
A lot of the time, we react based on the situation. If someone gets us angry, we want to yell or fight, but this verse is telling us to cling to the freedom we've been given in Christ. Jesus is telling us to not let events around us dictate how we act or behave.
