What really matters

For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,

but the word of the Lord endures forever."

And this is the word that was preached to you.

-1 Peter 1:24-25

Everything is temporary, and there are two major implications of this simple statement of fact. The first is revealed in Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." This verse essentially tells us that it's pointless to focus so much on something so temporary as treasures on earth (which could be money, prosperity, career or academic development, etc), when we can have permanent treasures in heaven. This is not to say that we shouldn't strive to do well in life, but our priority is, and should always be, God. In verse 33, Jesus tells us plainly, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

The second implication is more of a consolation. When we go through tough times, we always know it's temporary, and we can find consolation in the permanent word of God. I like to tell myself that it could always be worse. If I didn't do good on a test, I could've failed the whole course; If I'm stressing about a deadline, I could've been stressing about where I would get my next meal; if I'm sad, I could've been sick; and if I'm sick, I could've been dead.

So, I thank God that whatever I was facing at the moment was the most of my worries, not something worse.

Whatever it is you're going through today, take consolation in the word of God, and know that all things are working together for your good. I like to listen to "Intentional" by Travis Greene, I think you'll enjoy it too, and it always boosts my mood after.

Peace and love of Christ be with you all!
