Unity and faith, peace and progress

There is a lot of division among Christians. There are so many denominations, each with its own unique practices, and sometimes, this lack of uniformity leads to confusion and disunity. Some might say that a particular church is "fake" or that they "worship the devil." And while sometimes, these claims might be "valid" or found on an innocent concern, the disunity in the Christian community does more harm than good.

We've all probably heard the saying, "united we stand, divided we fall," and even in the story where Jesus was accused of casting out demons by Beelzebul, he tells us that a house divided against itself cannot stand (Read here). In 1 Corinthians 1:10, Paul writes, "I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought."

So, what can we really do? It's not like we can just get all the churches in the world together, get them to abandon all their doctrines, and start all over again as a single unit. What we can do is to start with ourselves. First, we have to realize that we are ALL Christians and we believe in the same God who sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die for us, raised Him from the dead, and pours out His spirit in each of us. Second, we all hold some sort of prejudice against others, and it's our job to fish it out and work on eliminating it, and this also applies to other social groupings like race, religion, etc. One way to start is by spending time within those communities, and a lot of the time, you'll find that your prejudice might be baseless or outright wrong.

May the peace and love of Christ be with you all as you fish out your prejudices and demolish them even as we strive towards unity in the Church and the world as a whole!

Quick fact: The title phrase "Unity and faith, peace and progress," is actually the motto on the Nigerian coat of arms.
