In Reverse

Let me ask you a question: where does God stand in your life?

Think about what you do in a day: what is on your mind when you wake up, as you go about your day, what do you give the little free time that you might have to? You can be honest. I will too.

Now, let me ask you again. What is God's place in your life?

As much as many of us would like to say He comes first, it might not be true. Some reflection on my own life has revealed that about myself. In the midst of very real physical needs and concerns, God is often not necessarily a priority, but more so like an extracurricular.

People that know me know that I don't play about my to-do list. I have tasks assigned everyday, and when I wake up in the morning, I often think about what I'm going to do when. I have to go to class, then to my lab. When I get home, I still need to grade, do some studying for my MCAT, complete whatever other homework I have, and I think, "if I have time when I'm done with all this, I'll do my devotion, to maybe just listen to some audio bible as I get ready for bed."

I think a lot of your days might look something like that too, and it's understandable. Afterall, that project has a hard deadline, your grade on that exam is dependent on how much you study, but there's no immediately tangible repercursion for not reading your Bible today like you said you would...

A lot of you are probably familiar with Matthew 6:33 from the famous sermon on the mount,

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

I read this verse last week, and it struck as if I had never seen it before. I thought, "I've been living in reverse this whole time!"

I've been doing everything else first, and if I have extra time or energy left over, then I squeeze God in, but Jesus says seek God first, and don't worry about the other things.

It's much easier said than done, however, it is important to at least recognize and identify what your life currently looks like. Again, you can be honest. God already knows the truth, so don't lie to yourself. When you do, you can start striving towards what Jesus wants your life to look like.

Peace and love of Christ be with you all!
